Feel Good Divorce: Beauty and Spa Treatments

When you have a family to take care of and a household to hold together, it becomes distressingly easy to put yourself at the bottom of your list of priorities. (How else to explain the amount of time I’ve spent in my fuzzy Cookie Monster pajama pants…when it most certainly wasn’t bedtime?) Nothing picks me up more than looking damn good, which is why pampering oneself every once in awhile is important. Perhaps now is the time to make this number one on your to-do list. Some popular beauty and spa treatments to consider:

1. While I generally look horrific on a day to day basis, it can be nice to get your makeup done, or treat yourself to a combination mani/pedi. It’ll make you feel pretty! (At least for a day.) You can get a free makeover at your local makeup counter, or check yourself into a luxe spa, such as Manhattan’s Red Door Spa, which offers a number of makeup lessons and application processes, in addition to a multitude of manicure and pedicure services. Looking to escape the city? The Lake Austin Spa Resort in Texas and the Golden Door in southern California both offer makeup application and nail therapy.

2. Feeling a tightness in your neck? Lower back pain? Yup, that’s stress, and it sounds as if you could use a massage. The Townhouse Spa in midtown Manhattan offers relaxation massages, eastern meridian massages, herbal massages, stone massages, etc. Elsewhere, spas like the Miraval Resort in Tucson, AZ also promise to loosen persnickety muscles.

3. Herbal wraps are another popular spa treatment, meant to tone and tighten your skin, cleanse your body of toxins, and improve circulation. Wraps usually contain a combination of herbs and essential oils. The Acqua Beauty Bar’s Seaweed Gel Wrap, for example, contains sea kelp, algae, rose hip seed oil, willow bark, aloe vera oil, vitamin E, and lavender oil to rejuvenate and heal the body.

4. But who cares about toning your skin, when you can use a body scrub to promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, relieve depression, improve blood circulation, and manage pain? Hello, you had me at “relaxation.” Head to the Faina European Day Spa in midtown Manhattan, and choose from their Champagne & Rose Body Scrub Treatment, Lavender Body Scrub, Peppermint Sugar Body Scrub, Chocolate Raspberry Body Scrub, and Clay Soufflé Chocolate Mint Sugar Body Scrub.

To find a spa near you — for either a solo retreat or a girl’s weekend —use sites like Spa-nyc, SpaFinder, or Spas of America to search for the spa treatments that feel the most disgustingly indulgent to you.
